4-6 So Abram left just as God said, and Lot left with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot with him, along with all the possessions and people they had gotten in Haran, and set out for the land of Canaan and arrived safe and sound. Abram passed through the country as far as Shechem and the Oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites occupied the land. Genesis 12:4-6, The Message
Abram and Sarai had left Ur of the Chaldeas with the whole family. They stopped in Haran and settled there until their father Terah died. Then the family went off in two different directions.
Nahor, Abrams brother, and his family went one way. Abram and his family headed toward Canaan again. Lot went with them. Lot’s father died in Ur, and Abram had taken him under his wing.
From a privileged upbringing, and life in a wealthy city, Sarai and Abram became travelers, with a tent for a home. They settled in Haran for a while, established a place for themselves there, and then Abram heard God’s call again.
Off into the desert they go.
