Musical Introspection

A friend introduced me to “Jelly Roll” yesterday. She asked me to listen to the song “I Need a Favor” and respond. I started listening and savored every minute of the musical sound.

I only talk to God when I need a favor
And I only pray when I ain’t got a prayer
So, who the hell am I, who the hell am I
To expect a Savior, oh
If I only talk to God when I need a favor?
But God, I need a favor
Amen, amen
Amen, amen

Hangin’ in there, just barely
Throwin’ up prayers, like Hail Mary’s
If You’re still there, Lord, spare me
Oh my God, oh my God, Hail Mary

The words. He says, “I’m a mess.” Life is hard. This situation is bigger than anything humanity can handle. So, he goes to God and feels guilty about it. “I don’t do anything to deserve this. I don’t even talk to you unless I need a favor.”

How many of us pray this way? I know, there are periods of my life that this has been true for me.

We don’t earn our salvation. We don’t deserve anything.

But God loves us, and in His grace and mercy has given us a way to live with Him.
