Me? Submit? (Col. 3:20-21)

Submission is not something we in America do well. I can’t speak for those in other countries, because I don’t have enough experience in and of your cultures. But individual rights and privileges—something I believe in and support—can lead us to think only of ourselves and what we deserve and have rights to.
Individualistic thinking—what’s in it for me, what will make me happy, how can I change the things you do that irritate me—can undermine our marriages. Two of you have joined in one union, and for it to work you both need to serve, love, respect, and even submit to each other.
These are God’s words. Pay attention. Listen to what he says. Keep them in the forefront, and let them light up your hearts.

Colossians 3:18-19 (New Living Translation)
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.

Colossians 3:18-19 (The Message)
Wives, understand and support your husbands by submitting to them in ways that honor the Master. Husbands, go all out in love for your wives. Don’t take advantage of them.

Why study the Bible this way? If you take it into your mind and heart enough to translate it into a picture or word, it becomes part of you. If you add a sentence or two of explanation, you then engage another part of your brain which cements God’s words even firmer into your heart and mind. If you want to remember it, you can think of what  you drew.
