How Do We Help Others Out of a Hole?

Political parties and news reports would have us believe that people in one party have compassion, while those in the other party don’t care what happens to anyone who isn’t them. Choose your party. We all point fingers, but how do we show compassion for others?

I don’t believe there is only one way to truly help. I believe the difference is in matching the way that is assistance is given to the need. Emergencies require a different kind of help than long-term concerns.

When we come across a person trapped in a hole, people of compassion try to help. The way “help” is given falls under two general categories:

We could throw down everyhing the person would need to survive in the hole and continue the process as needed.

Or we could lower a ladder down the hole and help the person to climb out. This process requires that we get in the hole to boost them up step-by-step. Then, we must provide a continuing presence until they can move away from and learn to avoid the hole.

One method gives continuous assistance.

The other one offers aid with the expectation that it will be for a season as people get back on their feet.

Emergencies necessitate life rafts, or food baskets, or a shower and a bed…

I believe that respect and dignity are shown with a ladder and help to climb up to and live at ground level.

And there is more than one way to show this kind of love and care for others. Maybe it takes repitition of both methods.

Let’s work together.
