Psalm 1 was written during Israel’s captivity in Babylon after the horrors of war. Yet, it starts with the word “Blessed.” Life is hard, and we weep (Psalm 137:1), and God’s people are powerless, but not hopeless. Why not?

But [the one] whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers. (Psalm 1:2-3, NIV)

Because they are in relationship with God. He had not left them alone or blocked their prayers. He is with them, around them, and in them. And God tells them, you can flourish here because you are planted in Me. The river of life hasn’t dried up, and you will even bear fruit and prosper, even in hard times.

Psalm 2 tells of evil forces of the world celebrating destruction, and how does God respond? He laughs. He tells the rulers of the world, “You don’t see things clearly. I am the ruler over all.”

 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. (Psalm 2:7-8, NIV)

To the world, God is invisible, but we can see His Glory.
Do you believe that God is in control?

But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain. (Psalm 3:3-4, NIV)

Psalm 3 starts with a cry for help. Our situation is desperate. We can do nothing to change our circumstances. But God knows us better than we know ourselves. He adopts us into His family. He provides for all our needs.

Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. (Acts 4:29, NIV)

Dear Lord, consider the threats we are under and give us courage to act in great boldness. Help us to live, speak, and act differently that those who don’t see or know You. We know how BIG our GOD is! Amen.
