Animals follow their instincts—they can’t say no. But if you’re human, you have the ability to choose either “yes” or “no.” That ability gives you access to freedom.
Distractions, blind alleys, seductive invitations, over-extending purchases, revenge…no matter what is on your list of enticements, you have the God-given ability to just say “no” and be set free to follow Jesus.
Say “no” to following your impulses, appetites, whims, and temptations—all of these are damaged by sin, and that makes them unreliable guides in any direction worth taking.
But don’t stop with “no.” There is so much to say “yes” to, and when you hold to what is good, you are free to bear fruit.
[Jesus said,] “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing…I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me…This is my command: Love each other.” John 15:5-17, NLT
