If I ask God for a sign,
Does it reveal doubt or faith?
Does it unmask weakness or prompt obedience?
Is this dream, this “knowing,” this word, from you, Lord?
Lord, give me a sign.
(Judges 7)
Gideon asked for a sign, many times,
and God responded to his need.
Once God placed a sign in the enemy camp,
and only through obedience
was Gideon able to see the sign.
(Isaiah 7)
In time of national crisis,
God sent his prophet to King Ahaz to say,
Be firm in faith; don’t be afraid; ask for a sign.”
The king refused to test God,
and instead tried His patience.
The sign was given, anyway,
that foretold the birth of the Savior.
(Matthew 14:)
In a storm, Peter asked, “Ghost or Rabbi?”
His sign: “Come” and an outstretched hand.
Peter left the boat and walked on water
until fleeting doubt drenched him. Then,
Hand-in-hand, in faith and obedience,
Peter walked on the waves with his Savior.
(John 20)
“Are you for real?”
Doubting Thomas asked for a sign.
Jesus gently invited inspection
of His resurrected body.
Thomas believed.
(Fall, 2020)
Sisters faced urgent care needs for mother
during a pandemic and had no clue what to do.
They prayed together on the phone,
and, within the hour, praised God
as He flung doors wide open—God signs.
(Spring, 2019)
Is the coffee shop no longer the place
God wants me to be His ambassador?
An alternate location resulted in
inexplicable phone-computer malfunction
which made me ask, “Is this a sign?
“God, you will have to show me.”
Crossed the street, and was greeted with,
“We’ve been waiting for you. What do you think…”
The coffee shop is still my mission field.
(Last week of 2024)
Three nights filled with dreams of giving a Bible
to the young waitress who poured our coffee
as we discussed spiritual matters.
Today, she poured and asked about creation.
“This is what the Bible says. Do you have one?”
At her hesitant “no,” we asked,
“Would you like one that belonged to our mom?”
The sign: her delighted, “Oh, yes!”
Tomorrow, when she pours our coffee, it is hers.
Signs provide God’s reassurance, “I am with you always.”
When I feel doubt creeping in, I turn my face toward Him with praise
And step into a chain reaction that He has prepared for all who believe:
Praise > Faith > Pray Powerful Prayers > Overcome Evil > Life in His Kingdom on earth.
