As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.
Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!”Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Mark 4:35-40
The disciples were with Jesus–he was right there–visible. They could reach out and touch him. They had experienced his miracles and power, heard his teaching in his own voice. If they closed their eyes they could still hear him snoring light, reach out and touch him, and know they were with the Son of God. And still they panicked.
How often will I make the same mistake?
I know:
- I am a child of God, your child.
- You know and care about all the details.
- You are the all-powerful, all-knowing Creator God that I don’t even begin to comprehend.
- You live in my inner being, and I try to limit you inside me, blocking off portions of myself.
- Yoru Holy Spirit speaks, leads, and flows through me, and I still like to think I am in control.
Storms are coming.
You are within me, and you are in control. Please take my fear, worry, hypochondria . . .
I give you the decision-making throne of my life.
Help my unbelief when I try to take it back.
