Ephesians 2:4-10 We neither make nor save ourselves

Eph2_4-10

There’s no way I can pull myself up by my boot straps to be good enough for God–which is the perfection in which He created us and placed it. We chose and daily choose against him–you’d think he’d be so sick of it and us that He’d throw us far away so we wouldn’t hurt and insult Him any longer. But He continues to love us anyway.

If it were up to me to earn my way to His presence, I’d give up right now. It’s an impossible task for us–perfection. But God didn’t and doesn’t give up on us. He chose mercy and love in spite of us. Not only that, He suffered and died for us.

That’s grace. That’s kindness. That’s love.

All we have to do is believe in God and His gift of grace.

Then our lives have purpose–the good works He has gotten ready for us to d0.

Ephesians 2:4-10 (New Living Translation)
By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Ephesians 2:4-10 (The Message)
It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on his own, with no help from us! Then he picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah. Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish! We don’t play the major role. If we did, we’d probably go around bragging that we’d done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.

Why study the Bible this way?

If you take it into your mind and heart enough to translate it into a picture or word, it becomes part of you. If you add a sentence or two of explanation, you then engage another part of your brain which cements God’s words even firmer into your heart and mind. If you want to remember it, you can think of what you drew.
