Up and down, mountaintops and valleys. That not only describes the terrain the Israelites wandered through (as recorded in the Bible), but their status, situations, beliefs, and emotional responses to life. One day they celebrated their escape through the miraculous parting of the Red Sea; not too long after that they were worshiping a golden calf. They marched around Jericho blowing trumpets and the city’s walls fell down, and the next season they were joining in the orgies at a fertility shrine…
It’s not that different for us. Life is good–today. Tomorrow, we might be devastated by illness, bad news, job loss, or abuse. We might be indulging in worldly “pleasures” or reaping the repercussions of our poor choices…Up and down, mountaintops and valleys.
Blessed is God, Israel’s God,

In the teeter-totter of our lives, there is a solid place of steadiness and security. It was there for the Israelites—they were always God’s people.
And it can be there for you.
God is always with his people, in his mercy and in his judgment—lovingly gracious.
