You’ve received Christ, and all your sins are covered under the blood of Jesus. Now it’s time to get on with your new life—shape up or ship out! Ouch! We can’t only address our behavior: Behave right! Look right! Act right! We need more than a surface cleaning–we need transformation.
- “Renew your mind.” That’s cognitive.
- “Heal your heart.” That’s affective.
- “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and you don’t do what I call you to do?” That’s behavioral.
“Keep your chin up” doesn’t work for very long—instead, we need to focus on root issues. Dealing with what is causing the behaviors is necessary for transformation in all areas. When our minds are renewed and our hearts are being changed, we don’t really need to worry about our behavior—our fruit. As we mature, we bear fruit that ripens and matures.
It’s doesn’t require just a one-time decision, but a daily struggle. Every once in a while we get to have one of those wonderful experiences when there is a major revelation (AHA!) about something that brings healing and freedom.
But most of our life isn’t a magic carpet ride–instant and comfortable flying above the desert, but resembles plodding on a camel through dust storms, hills and valley, and heat!
Faithfully, daily, and slowly we bring things to the cross, and slowly we change and become more like Christ.
That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.
